Fracture or Sprain
Care for a suspected broken bone, sprain, or strain — immobilize, ice, and watch for signs of shock.
- 1Keep still
Don't move the injured area. Don't try to straighten it.
- 2Support it
Use a rolled towel, magazine, or splint to immobilize above and below the joint.
- 3Ice the area
Apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth for 20 minutes on, 20 off.
- 4Watch for shock
Pale, sweaty, rapid breathing? Lay them down and elevate legs.
- 5Seek care
Get medical evaluation — X-ray may be needed.
