Burns
Treat thermal burns from heat, fire, or steam — cool the area, cover it, and know when to seek care.
- 1Remove from source
Get the person away from the heat. Remove smoldering clothing if not stuck to skin.
- 2Cool the burn
Run cool (not cold) water over the area for at least 10–20 minutes.
- 3Cover loosely
Use a clean, non-stick dressing or plastic wrap. Do not apply creams, butter, or ice.
- 4Pain relief
Over-the-counter pain medication can help if appropriate.
- 5Seek care
Get medical help for burns larger than a palm, on face/hands/joints, or that look deep.
