Severe Allergic Reaction

Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction — use epinephrine and call emergency services fast.

Call 911 first
  1. 1
    Use epinephrine

If they have an EpiPen, help them use it in the outer thigh. Hold for 3 seconds.

  2. 2
    Call emergency services

Always call after epinephrine — a second reaction can occur.

  3. 3
    Lie flat

Have them lie down with legs raised, unless breathing is difficult — then sit up.

  4. 4
    Second dose if needed

If no improvement after 5–15 minutes and a second pen is available, use it.

  5. 5
    Monitor

Stay with them until help arrives. Be ready to start CPR if they stop breathing.
