Severe Bleeding
Stop heavy bleeding from a wound with pressure, layered dressings, and elevation until help arrives.
Call 911 first- 1Protect yourself
Wear gloves if available to avoid contact with blood.
- 2Apply pressure
Press firmly on the wound with a clean cloth or bandage. Do not lift to check.
- 3Add more layers
If blood soaks through, add more cloth on top — never remove the first layer.
- 4Elevate if possible
Raise the injured limb above heart level if no fracture is suspected.
- 5Call for help
Get emergency medical care immediately for severe bleeding.

- • Do not remove deeply embedded objects — stabilize around them.
