Call 911 first
  1. 1
    Protect yourself

Wear gloves if available to avoid contact with blood.

  2. 2
    Apply pressure

Press firmly on the wound with a clean cloth or bandage. Do not lift to check.

  3. 3
    Add more layers

If blood soaks through, add more cloth on top — never remove the first layer.

  4. 4
    Elevate if possible

Raise the injured limb above heart level if no fracture is suspected.

  5. 5
    Call for help

Get emergency medical care immediately for severe bleeding.

Important
  • Do not remove deeply embedded objects — stabilize around them.
