- 1Check responsiveness
Tap shoulders and shout. If no response, call emergency services immediately.
- 2Open airway
Tilt the head back, lift the chin. Look, listen, and feel for breathing for no more than 10 seconds.
- 3Start chest compressions
Place hands center of chest. Push hard and fast — 100 to 120 per minute, about 2 inches deep.
- 4Give rescue breaths (if trained)
After 30 compressions, give 2 breaths. Otherwise continue hands-only CPR.
- 5Don't stop
Continue until help arrives, an AED is ready, or the person starts breathing.
